Photography has taken me to some incredible places, but it’s the people I’ve met along the way that stay with me.

I’m Al Shelley, a Dublin-based travel and documentary photographer with a particular interest in people, culture and everyday life.

My photography has taken me through Vietnam, India, Myanmar and beyond, often working in markets, villages and communities where daily life provides the strongest stories. I’m particularly drawn to photographing people in their own environment and creating images that feel natural, honest and connected to place.

Much of my work is in black and white, although colour remains an important part of my photography when it adds to the atmosphere or story of an image.

I hold the distinctions AIPF (Associate of the Irish Photographic Federation) and AFIAP (Artist of the International Federation of Photographic Art), and my work has received awards in national and international photographic competitions.

For me, travel photography is about more than documenting where I’ve been. It’s about the people I meet, the moments I’m invited into, and creating photographs that say something about the places and communities I’ve had the opportunity to experience.
